He was born on 16 April 1953 in Lagos state, western Nigeria, the son of Barnabas Usifo and wife Patricia Usifo. His father worked at the Central Bank of Nigeria in various branches of the country and rose to senior management before retiring.
After several years in Lagos, his family moved to the city of Ibadan in Oyo , where Alex Usifo received his basic education. Alex Usifo completed his primary education in Ibadan, Oyo State and received his first school leaving certificate.
After completing his primary education in Ibadan, Alex Usifo attended the St. John Bosco High School in Ubiaja, Edo State in southern Nigeria. Upon completion of his secondary education, Alex Usifo became independent and worked for the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria.
After five years of active service with the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria, Alex Usifo was admitted to the Seminary of St. Peter and Paul in 1978, Bodija in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria.
In 1981 he left the seminary when he was admitted to the University of Lagos to study mass communication at graduate level. As a UNILAG student, life was very hard, difficult and challenging for him.
Due to his high poverty he could not pay school fees, accommodation, textbooks and food. However, halfway through the course, he decided to finish the job and pack his things and leave school, but some of his classmates interfered and encouraged him by encouraging him to exercise patience he exercised would soon go through what he finally did.
Over time, the urge to influence his voice grew. He began auditioning with various media outlets including Lagos Radio Nigeria, Lagos Voice and Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) in Ilorin, where he topped the list, but was eventually dropped because of the quota system.
After graduating from university, Alex Usifo was hit by unemployment for many years. At the invitation of a friend and brother, Peter Okun, Alex Usifo attended a Deeper Life Crusade at the National Stadium in Lagos, where he sincerely and desperately asked God to change his condition.
God spoke to his thoughts in this crusade and encouraged him to look inward and use his talent. After this Night Crusade, Alex Usifo searched himself and found himself capable of acting and so began his acting career.
His acting career began in 1984, when he starred in Ray Yusuf’s NTA, Illorin, television movie “The Return of the Natives.” He then took the lead roles in “Natas” and “Two People” in Lagos Television (LTV) produced by Baba Fashina. He then went to the NTA station in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria to participate in the weekly television series “At Your Service”.
He was part of the NTA productions “Echoes of Life” and “Turning Wheel”. This entire incident occurred between 1984 and 1987. During this time he was perceived by humans.
