Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi (born May 27, 1965 in Nigeria) is a Nigerian politician who served as the fifth governor of the state of Rivers from 2007 to 2015 and currently serves as Nigerian Minister of Transport.
On April 26, 2011, he was re-elected for a second term. Amaechi was a member of the People’s Democratic Party before leaving for the All Progressives Congress on November 27, 2013. Today he is Acting Federal Minister of Transport. He is also general director of the Buhari re-election campaign. He was nominated in July 2019 by President Buhari for appointment as Minister. Amaechi was asked to bow during his performance by the Senate. He was sworn in as Minister of Transport of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Amaechi was born in Ubima, the administrative district of Ikwerre, Rivers State, as the daughter of the late Elder Fidelis Amaechi and wife Mary Amaechi. His first and last names are Ikwerre and mean “God is strength or power” and “who knows tomorrow”. He grew up in Diobu, a densely populated neighborhood in Port Harcourt, and received from 1970 to 1976 his early education at St. Theresa Primary School. In 1982, after attending Government Secondary School, he earned the West African Senior School Certificate, Okolobiri.
Chibuike received a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in English Literature and Literature from the University of Port Harcourt in 1987, where he was President of the National Union of Rivers State Students (NURSS). He graduated in 1988 from the compulsory National Youth Service Corps. He then joined the services of Pamo Clinics and Hospitals Limited, owned by Peter Odili, the former Governor of the River State, where he worked until 1992.
He is married to Judith Amaechi and they have three boys.
