George Akume (born December 27, 1953 in Nigeria) is a Nigerian politician who is currently Minister for Special Tasks and Intergovernmental Affairs. He was Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. From June 2011 to June 2015, he was Minority Leader of the Senate. From May 29, 1999 to May 29, 2007, he was also Governor of Benue State. He was the first governor of Benue State to serve two terms.
He was elected governor of Benue State on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and was then elected to the Senate. Akume was re-elected Senator for Benue North-West in the April 2011 election. The elections took place on the Platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).
He won another term in 2015, but lost in 2019 against Senator Orke Jev of the PDP. On July 23, 2019, President Buhari appointed Akume Minister.
