Goodluck Jonathan: Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan GCFR, GCON (born November 20, 1957 in Nigeria) was a Nigerian politician who was president of Nigeria from 2010 to 2015. Previously, he served as vice president of Nigeria and governor from 2007 to 2010. The Bayelsa Governor Seriake Dickson appointed former President Goodluck Jonathan honorary special advisor to the Board of the Bayelsa Education Trust Fund in August 2019 . In June 2019 Goodluck Jonathan appeared as chairman of the newly opened International Peace Summit (ISCP).
Jonathan lost the 2015 presidential election to Muhammadu Buhari and became the first Nigerian sitting president to admit defeat.
Goodluck Jonathan was born into a family of canoe manufacturers. He completed his elementary and secondary education in the state of Bayelsa, Nigeria, and received both his first school leaving certificate and the West African Senior Citizenship Certificate.
After completing primary and secondary education, Goodluck Jonathan attended the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers, Nigeria and graduated with a bachelor’s degree (B, sc) in zoology, a master’s degree (M, sc) in hydrobiology and fisheries and graduated with a PhD in Zoology.
Prior to joining Nigerian politics in 1998, Goodluck Jonathan was an education inspector, lecturer and environmental officer. Goodluck Jonathan is currently married to Dame Patience Jonathan and the marriage is currently blessed with two children, Ariwera Jonathan and Aruabi Jonathan.
Goodluck Jonathan is a Christian from the Ijaw ethnic group. In 2015, Goodluck denied Jonathan and lost the 2015 presidential election to Muhammadu Buhari, after which he conceded defeat and became the first seated Nigerian president to do so. Goodluck Jonathan’s term as President of Nigeria ended on May 29, 2015, and Muhammadu Buhari succeeded him as current President of Nigeria.
During Goodluck Jonathan’s term as President of Nigeria, he was heavily criticized by public-sector officials and the massacre and bombardment of innocent citizens and homes, churches, hospitals and mosques by Boko Haram terrorists due to the high rate of corruption in Nigeria. The worst scenario was the abduction of the Chibok girls in Maidugiri in northern Nigeria, which received worldwide attention.
Goodluck Jonathan is an active member of the Democratic People’s Party (PDP) and was in the party until today. After completing his studies, Goodluck Jonathan worked as an education inspector, lecturer and environmental officer before joining politics in 1998.
On 29 May 1999, Goodluck Jonathan was sworn in as Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State alongside Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, who was sworn in as the Executive Governor of Bayelsa State on the platform of the Democratic People’s Party (PDP). Goodluck Jonathan was Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State until the beginning of December 2005.
On December 9, 2005, Goodluck Jonathan was sworn in as the governor of Bayelsa State after the current Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha was charged by the Bayelsa State House of Assembly with money laundering in the United Kingdom.
In 2007, Goodluck Jonathan was sworn in as Vice President of Nigeria and Umaru Musa Yar’Adua as President of Nigeria. As Nigerian vice president, Goodluck Jonathan appeared very cautious. He recognized the constitutional limits of the vice-president’s office, attended cabinet meetings, and was a member of the National Security Council, the National Defense Council, the Federal Executive Council, and the Chairman of the National Economic Council.

He renamed Prince Adetokunbo Kayode, who was the Minister of Labour to Minister of Justice,and mandated him to replace Mr. Mike Aondoakaa. During his tenure as the Acting President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan promised to continue implementing the Seven-point agenda policy framework of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
On 15th September 2010, Goodluck Jonathan announced on Facebook of his intention to run as President of Nigeria in the 2011 general election. On 1st January 2012, Goodluck Jonathan removed fuel subsidy which result in a general indefinite strike by the labor union, thereby causing a halt on economic and commercial activities in the whole country.
