James Onanefe Ibori (born August 4, 1959 in Nigeria) is a Nigerian politician who was Governor of Delta state from May 29, 1999 to May 29, 2007. Ibori is an ethnic Urhobo and member of the Democratic People’s Party (PDP). He is an influential leader in the Niger Delta and a national figure in Nigeria. In 2012, Ibori was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment for money laundering.

Ibori moved in the 1980s to London, where he married his wife Theresa. He worked as a cashier at the Wickes hardware store in Ruislip, Middlesex. In 1990, the couple was arrested for theft from the shop and fined £ 300. In 1991, he was convicted of handling a stolen credit card and fined £ 100.
He returned to Nigeria from 1994 to 1997 and worked as a consultant to the federal government of Sani Abacha in the formulation and implementation of public policy. In 1999, Ibori took a mortgage on a piece of land on Abbey Road in London. To disguise his previous beliefs in the UK, he received a false birth certificate and passport, which was medically impossible since he was one month after the date of his older sister’s birth date.
Ibori was married to Theresa Ibori between 1980 and 2003 when they separated. They have a daughter named Erhiatake Ibori, who represents Ethiope West constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly. Chief Ibori later re-married, this time to Senami Sosu.
