Kashim Ibrahim Shettima was born on Friday, September 2, 1966 in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. He attended Lamisula Elementary School in Maiduguri from 1972 to 1978; Government Community Secondary School, Biu in the southern part of Borno from 1978 to 1980; He moved to the Government Science Secondary School in Potiskum (now in the neighboring state of Yobe), where he completed his secondary education in 1983.
He studied at the University of Maiduguri and earned a degree in Agricultural Economics (BSc) in 1989. From 1989 to 1990, he was a member of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) at the disbanded Nigerian Agricultural Cooperative Bank in Calabar, the state capital Cross River in South -South Nigeria. In 1991 he earned a master’s degree in agricultural economics from the University of Ibadan in southwestern Nigeria. Shettima was a lecturer at the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Maiduguri and worked from 1991 to 1993 in the academic field.
In 1993 he moved to the banking sector and was appointed by the (now defunct) Commercial Bank of Africa Limited as head of the accounting department at the bank’s office in Ikeja, Lagos State, southwest, Nigeria. Shettima was there from 1993 to 1997. In 1997, he joined African International Bank Limited as Deputy Manager and became Manager in 2001. In 2001 he moved to Zenith Bank as head of the main office in Maiduguri.
He joined the Senior Manager / Branch Head at Zenith Bank; Deputy Director-General (HV) / Zone Chair (Northeast), Deputy Director-General / Zone Head (North-East), before leaving Zenith Bank as Director-General in 2007 after being appointed Finance Commissioner in Borno State. From 2007 to 2011 he worked as commissioner in 5 ministries.
He was Commissioner for Local Government and Government Affairs (2008), Education (2009), Agriculture and Natural Resources and finally at the Ministry of Health, from where he assumed the governorship in 2011, which he served under the platform of the now defunct All Nigeria People’s Party, ANPP, won and was reopened on May 29, 2011, the States Governors’ Forum, an umbrella organization of governors in the 19 states located in northern Nigeria. So far he has been advancing important changes in the forum’s affairs, with a focus on promoting the unity of the North and reviving the ailing North-American industries.
Alhaji Shettima is a practicing Muslim and is married to Hajiya Nana Shettima. The marriage is blessed with children.
