The engineer Rabi’u Musa, popularly known as Rabiu Kwankwaso, is a Nigerian politician from Kano. From 1999 to 2003 and from 2011 to 2015, he served as governor of  Kano twice. Rabiu was the first governor of the state of Kano in the fourth republic, who was elected on the platform of the Democratic People’s Party (PDP). Kwankwaso lost the re-election bid to Ibrahim Shekarau in 2003 and was appointed Minister of Defense by President Olusegun Obasanjo in July of the same year.

In 2015, Kwankwaso unsuccessfully contested the nomination for the presidential primaries under the opposition All Progressive Congress, but lost to Muhammad Buhari. He then swapped the Senate seat for Kano Central Senatorial District and won.

Kwankwaso was born on October 21, 1956 in the village of Kwankwaso in Madobi, a government district of the state of Kano. Rabiu attended Kwankwaso Elementary School, Gwarzo Boarding School, Wudil Craft School, and Kano Technical College before joining Kaduna Polytechnic, where he earned both his National Diploma and a Higher National Diploma. Kwankwaso completed his postgraduate studies in the UK at Middlesex Polytechnic (1982-1983) and Loughborough University of Technology (1983-1985), where he earned his master’s degree in water engineering. Kwankwaso was during his schooling an active student leader and an elected official of  Kano State Students Association.

Kwankwaso began work in 1975 with the State Agency for Water Resources and Technical Construction (WRECA) in Kano. He served as a civil servant for 17 years in various capacities and rose in the ranks of chief engineers.

In 1992, Kwankwaso was elected a member of the House of Representatives of Madobi. His subsequent election as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives put him at the center of national politics. He was a member of the Popular Front faction of the SDP led by General Shehu Yar’adua.

During the 1995 constitutional conference, Kwankwaso was elected as one of the delegates of Kano as a member of the Yar’adua-led People’s Democratic Movement. Kwankwaso joined the PDP in 1998 under the leadership of Mallam Musa Gwadabe, Senator Hamisu Musa and Alhaji Abdullahi Aliyu Sumaila on the platform of the Democratic Popular Movement in Kano. He joined the Democratic People’s Party on July 24, 2018.
